Fog Computing Assisted Smart City Infrastructure for Internet of Things Based Urban Services
Abstract
The rapid expansion of urban populations and the increasing demand for efficient public services have driven the development of smart city infrastructures powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. However, traditional cloud-centric IoT architectures often face challenges such as high latency, network congestion, limited bandwidth, and delayed decision-making, especially in real-time urban applications. Fog computing has emerged as a promising paradigm that extends cloud capabilities closer to the edge of the network, enabling localized data processing, storage, and analytics
This research proposes a fog computing-assisted smart city infrastructure for IoT-based urban services, designed to enhance efficiency, responsiveness, and scalability. The framework integrates IoT sensors, fog nodes, and cloud systems to enable real-time processing of urban data such as traffic monitoring, waste management, energy distribution, environmental sensing, and public safety systems. Fog nodes perform intermediate processing to reduce latency and bandwidth usage while ensuring faster decision-making for time-sensitive applications.
The study explores architecture design, data management strategies, and intelligent service optimization using machine learning techniques. Performance evaluation is based on latency, throughput, energy efficiency, and system scalability. The results indicate that fog computing significantly improves the responsiveness and reliability of smart city applications compared to traditional cloud-only models, making it a key enabler for next-generation urban infrastructure systems.
